PURNIA: The water discharge level at Birpur barrage in Supaul district as well as at Barahkshetra (Nepal), pegged at 2,54,235 cusecs and 1,72,500 cusecs respectively at 8 am, surged to 3,03,925 cusecs and 2,53,500 cusecs at 3 pm on Thursday. It indicated a rising trend, according to Central Water Commission (CWC) office in Purnia.
There is absolutely no threat to the embankments and spurs on Kosi river, says water resources department (WRD), Kosi division chief engineer Rajesh Kumar, though the water discharge levels have soared.
Kumar, dispelling all apprehensions, said on Thursday, "Sufficient amount of boulders and other anti-erosion materials have already been stockpiled to protect the embankments as well as the spurs. Besides, the engineers were also quite vigilant and watchful."Echoing similar sentiments, Saharsa DM Shashi Bhushan Kumar said though the water discharge levels had lately risen, "the overall situation was quite normal and there was nothing to panic about."
He, however, said the red alert, which was sounded earlier in the wake of accumulation of water in the artificial lake in rive Bhote Kosi after a landslide, in Sindhupalchok district of Nepal, has since been withdrawn after evacuees went back home.
Supaul DM Luxmi Prasad Chauhan, who is making an on-the-spot assessment of the prevailing situation on the embankments, could not be contact despite repeated attempts.
However, all the rivers like Mahananda, Kanki, Donk and Panar criss-crossing Purnia division, were flowing below the danger level, according to CWC office, Purnia.
